Is Your Teen In Trouble?
Mood swings and unpredictable behavior occur frequently in adolescence, so spotting the warning signs of substance abuse is not always easy. If your child exhibits several of the following behaviors, it could indicate drug use - prescription or otherwise:
- Is withdrawn, tired and careless about his/her personal appearance.
- Is hostile, uncooperative, lies often and has emotional outbursts.
- Hangs out with a new group of friends you have never met.
- Doesn't get along with other family members as well as they used to.
- Skips school often and has falling grades.
- Shows no interest in hobbies, sports or other favorite activities.
- Has changed his/her normal sleeping habits.
- Constantly asks to borrow money.
- Has difficulty concentrating and lacks coordination.
- Avoids you or is evasive, especially when you bring up their behavior.
- Has secretive phone conversations.
- Uses eye drops frequently.
- Unexplained disappearance of money, household items, or clothing.
- Hang-up phone calls.
- Missing prescription drugs.
- Unexplained weight loss
- Drug paraphernalia
- Slurred speech
- Curfew violations
- Running away
- Skin abrasions or sores
- Hostility towards family members
- Glassy or Red eyes
- Possessing unexplained valuables
- Depression
- Reckless Behavior
- No concern about future
- Lying/Deception
- Disregards consequences
- Verbally abusive
- Manipulative/Self-Centered
- Truancy
While these signs are not conclusive indicators of drug use, they are signs to watch for.
